Sustainability Champions, Brookfield Properties India, Support Pandemic Relief Efforts

We are proud of Brookfield’s global efforts to affect positive change in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is one story in a series of blogs highlighting the various global campaigns and how they made a difference.

For Brookfield Properties India, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is something that they truly believe in. It’s built into their operations as a priority. CSR has been at the forefront of their operations, taking place year-round for multiple years. At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic the team already had a robust CSR framework in place including, strong community relationships, NGO connections and engaged employees; it was just a matter of shifting their focus to the new needs the pandemic brought on.

“About 3-4 years ago, we used to do small scale CSR initiatives and they had a fragmented impact. But we learned by doing, and we realized that we needed to make a long-term investment,” said Varun Ahuja, Senior General Manager with Brookfield Properties India.

Varun provided an example of a school that the Brookfield Properties India team has adopted to support.

“The first phase of the project was completed in fiscal year 2018-19, and new facilities including washrooms, drainage, ramps and drinking water were introduced. In the next phase, classrooms were upgraded to better facilitate development. Provision of a safe, sanitary and holistic environment and increased access to education within the community were the driving forces for this project,” said Varun.

Brookfield Properties India focuses their CSR efforts in five sectors: education, healthcare, skill development, child development, and environment and sustainability; these five pillars drive the type of initiatives they support. They also focus efforts on communities where Brookfield Properties India operates. Initiatives are chosen for their strong value proposition to Brookfield team members. During the COVID-19 pandemic specifically, Brookfield Properties India has continued with the strong foundations of their ongoing CSR efforts, but increased focus on COVID-specific initiatives. Listed below are some of the ways the team provided support during the pandemic:

  • Contributed to Haryana COVID Relief Fund.
  • Donated to Blue Chip Hospitality Pvt. Ltd. in Noida Campus and assisted in distributing approximately 25,000 meals to migrant labourers and underprivileged individuals.
  • Community help by distributing 500 nos. of dry ration kits in Mumbai City.
  • Donated to Madhya Pradesh Tiger Foundation Society, by supporting 1,000 workers at Wildlife Sanctuary & National Parks in Ratapani, Kuno, Kanha, Satpura, Panna, Bandhavgarh-Madhya Pradesh.
  • Provided assistance to Samta Purushottam Agrawal Memorial Foundation, by contributing to their COVID-19 victim’s relief fund for the distribution of masks, dry rations and food.
  • Supported Earth Saviours, Gurukul that helps around 450 abandoned senior citizens and mentally disabled, low income individuals who live permanently in the NGO’s shelter home.

Varun commented on how Brookfield truly believes in doing the right thing and being a good corporate citizen, which is why these initiatives are ongoing and carried out year-round.

“It is very important, especially in these times, in which the human race is basically challenged and pushed to a corner, to come together to support and sustain each other. And it is also very closely linked to our core values at Brookfield when we talk about integrity and humility,” Varun observed.

When asked about why giving back is important, Varun commented: “We are a part of this community, and if our community is healthy, we will be healthy.”
